Description

Norwich, CT - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 479 The First NB Ch. # 458
An evenly circulated Brown Back from the third of Norwich's eight issuing banks, a somewhat incredible number of issuers even for a prosperous and growing community of some 15,000 inhabitants in 1865. Norwich owns the distinction of being the birthplace of Benedict Arnold (listed in the city's Wikipedia entry as a "famous colonial soldier"), whose portrait hangs prominently in the town's main library (Come home, Benedict, all is forgiven), and was also the birthplace of Senator Thomas J. Dodd, the father of Senator Christopher Dodd and the scion of this ethically challenged family. Pen signed PCGS Very Good 10.
