Description

Finest Known From This One-Bank Town

Punta Gorda, FL - $10 1902 Plain Back Fr. 631 The First NB Ch. # (S)10512
An incredible note which is one of the highlight items in the Sunshine State Collection. It comes from the only bank to issue in this Charlotte County community, and is new to the census, which now totals a meager five notes. All save one have been closely held for years, with the lone example that has appeared on the market during the past decade realizing $16,100 in last year's FUN auction (against a pre-sale estimate of $5000-7500) despite grading only Fine and displaying a rust stain. None of the four other notes known from here grade better than Fine, but this piece, which has never been offered at public sale and has spent the last two decades ensconced in this collection, grades an amazing PMG Uncirculated 62 EPQ, a grade that would certainly be even higher were the bottom margin not slightly trimmed into the design. Any estimate here is simply a guess, as no example from here even close to this in grade has ever been available to collectors before this evening. Track and Price values this note at between $37,500 and $52,500, and we would not be at all surprised to see the hammer fall somewhere well within that range.
