Description
Lovely Watermelon Hundred Treasury Note
Fr. 377 $100 1890 Treasury Note Very Fine-Extremely Fine. This Watermelon Hundred is one of fewer than three dozen examples of its type in existence, and one of fewer than two dozen that have ever appeared on the market. Eight pieces are permanently in government hands, and several others are known by serial number only, having never reached the numismatic marketplace. We sold this note once before, in our June 1994 Memphis Sale, and are every bit as impressed with it now, over eight years later. This piece was formerly in the Amon Carter Collection. The note is well centered, with excellent color, and it gives the appearance of a higher grade than its technically correct VF-EF. The back, from which the nickname of this note is derived, is beautifully clean, and the "Watermelon" effect of the large zeros remains pronounced, as the ink quality is razor sharp. In its last auction appearance in 1999, this example realized $74,800. With the current tremendous emphasis on paper money collecting, it is a shame that only two dozen collectors comprise the exclusive group that may possesses this stately type.Auction Info
