Trans-Mississippi Treasury Draft

Marshall, TX- Treasury Agency Trans-Miss(issippi) Department Principal Depositary's Office Draft $378 Oct. 4, 1864 Very Fine.
Marshall was the fourth largest city in Texas and was also the seat of the richest county in the state at the dawn of the Civil War. Its stature only grew during the war as it was not only a Confederate supply center, but also the nexus of Confederate Trans-Mississippi civil authority. It is also where the exiled Confederate government of the state of Missouri settled. This Treasury Draft is signed by the Principal Depositary for the Trans-Mississippi Department M.J. Hall. It has a small train vignette at upper left and was printed by S.H. Cushing & Co. of Houston. There are a few small edge tears with the longest being approximately a half an inch. There is a tape repair in the upper right corner to go along with three thin tape top edge repairs. Nonetheless, very few Trans-Mississippi items of this ilk have survived.
