Description

Burlington, NJ- Burlington Bank $100 Aug. 30, 1855 as G18 as Wait 242 Proprietary Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was incorporated in 1856 and remained in business until closing its doors in 1865. The $100 design incorporates a large vignette of the New Jersey coat of arms flanked by a vignette of a girl carrying a sheaf of grain on her head at left, and an oval portrait of Washington at lower right. We are aware of one period Proof of this design that we sold as part of a $50-$100 uncut Proof sheet at this year's CSNS Currency Signature Auction. Thus, Proprietary Proofs such as this sharply printed example may be the only realistic way to add an impression of this note. It was printed from the original plate by ABNCo sometime during the 20th century for general corporate programs and purposes.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection
