Description

Ponca and Otoe Agencies, Indian Territory- J(oseph) H. Sherburne Indian Trader Check $114.66 Mar. 17, 1889 Very Fine, CC.
Sherburne was a raiser of and dealer in horses and Indian ponies. He opened a trading post in 1876 under a federal license to trade with the Ponca and other tribes. The trading post was opened until 1895 when Sherburne moved to Montana in order to trade with the Blackfeet tribe. This check was printed by A. Gast & Co. of St. Louis. A very nice vignette of horses being frightened by lightening is at upper right and at far left is a wide-eyed bull. It is endorsed on the back and there is some minor pencil writing. There is a faint rubber stamping on the face and the back has rubber stampings of The Strong & Ross Banking Co. of Arkansas City, Kansas and the First National Bank of Leavenworth, Kansas. A few pinholes and a couple of tiny edge splits are observed.
