Description
Waupun, WI- Waupun Bank $3 18__ as G6 Krause G6 Proof PCGS Choice New 63.The Waupun Bank was organized in 1856 and remained in business until being placed in receivership in May 1861. This action was likely necessitated due to the large amount of Missouri and Georgia state bonds that served to secure the bank's circulation at the time. The bank's notes were ultimately redeemed at 80ยข on the dollar by state authorities. The design of the $3, part of a sheet that also included a Santa Claus $2 note, is patriotic in nature with a vignette of an allegorical woman with an eagle, draped in the Stars and Stripes at center. A vignette of Washington in full military uniform is at left and a portrait of a young woman is at lower right. The state free banking die is at upper right. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with four POCs in the signature lines. Proofs from this bank were not part of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. At present we are aware of just two examples of this note in Proof form. Formerly part of The Eric P. Newman Collection, we last auctioned this example for $840 in our 2023 CSNS U.S. Currency Signature and we anticipate that price level will be tested again tonight.
