Description

Sour Lake, TX- Sour Lake Volcanic Springs Co. $5 Sep. 6, 1862 Medlar 4 PMG Fine 12.
Sour Lake was settled in 1835 and became a popular destination for several reasons, chief of those being its massive potential for the oil industry. Oil was discovered in the area in 1901, and the well-known oil company Texaco, which is currently operated by the Chevron Corporation, was born shortly thereafter in 1903. Oil is still abundant in the town today. In addition to its oil production, the city is also known for the sulfur springs that flow into a nearby lake. Because of its popularity, Sour Lake is currently the oldest surviving town in Hardin County. Our current offering, which is an indication of the existence of those sulfur springs, bears the imprint of the Texas Printing House in Houston and features a depiction of a Native American at the edge of a waterfall. The directors of the company are listed below this vignette. A red overprint is at right of center, and the overall design is printed on the back of blue bonds. We last auctioned this exact note in January 2017 as part of The Eric P. Newman Collection for $940. PMG mentions a tear which is at the top of the piece and extends through the date.
