Description
S.F. Austin Signed Texian Loan
(San Felipe de Austin), TX/New Orleans, LA- Government of Texas
Texian Loan $320 Jan. 11, 1836 Cr. 36A4 Medlar UNL Bevill 4.13
Extremely Fine.An example of the first Texian Loan that preceded the Declaration of Independence from Mexico by almost two months, this piece is serial number 474 and was printed by Benjamin Levy of New Orleans. One Jas. N. Morrison advanced Texas an installment of $32 on the total of $320 due. That payment would eventually entitle Morrison to 640 acres of Texas land. The commissioners on the part of Texas that pen signed this loan were S(tephen) F. Austin, B(ranch) T. Archer, and Wm. H. Wharton. Austin, of course, is known as the Father of Texas. Branch Tanner Archer would also serve as a legislator and Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas. William Harris Wharton was an orator and leader during the Texas Revolution. This example has ink burn in all three signatures, which is common for these certificates. A triangle shaped cut-out-cancel is observed. The last example that we auctioned in XF with a cut-out-cancel realized $4,112 in April 2017.
