Description

Salt Lake City, UT- Drovers Bank $1 July 1, 1856 Rust 83 PMG Uncirculated 62 EPQ.
Notes from this bank are datelined both in Kansas (Ft. Leavenworth) and Utah (Salt Lake City). Apparently, the plan was to have banks issuing identical notes at both ends of a trade route between the two cities. This plot, which probably involved circulating each other's notes far from home, never got off the ground. Many unissued notes were subsequently used as overprinted advertising flyers by other firms. A handsome note designed and printed by W.L. Ormsby, this example incorporates a panoramic vignette of a mixed herd of cattle and sheep that occupies most of the face coupled with Ormsby's trademark orange bullseye back design comprising hundreds of tiny ONEs. It is in an uncommonly high grade for the type, and it traces its provenance to The Eric P. Newman Collection.
