Description

Nashville, TN- Planters Bank of Tennessee $100 18__ G352 Schafluetzel N-B.Pla-100-5aPf PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
The bank was organized in 1833, with the state appointing five of the fifteen directors and an amount equal to one half of one percent of the capital stock paid in designated for the use of the common schools. The bank ultimately had nine branches across the state. The bank managed to survive the Civil War by a matter of weeks, placing over $4,000,000 in assets in the hands of a receiver on July 3, 1865, as part of a voluntary liquidation effort. This $100 note design was intended for branch use and depicts a young farm boy taking a break by two large sheaves of wheat at center, flanked by two tombstone cameo-like portraits of Franklin. Both end panels contain a vignette of three allegorical women representing the Arts, Knowledge, and perhaps Agriculture. This example is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with rectangles cut out of the signature spaces to prevent unauthorized issue. A sheet containing two examples of this note was tucked away in the Pennsylvania section of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale (Lot 1716) and Haxby illustrated and listed this note in Proof form in his 1988 state catalog (pages 2390 and 2397). Schafluetzel pegs the number of surviving Proofs at 3-5 examples which seems about right.
