Description

Scituate, RI- Hamilton Bank $5 Apr. 6, 1854 G8 Durand 2131 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The Hamilton Bank was first incorporated as the Scituate Bank in 1818, but it was liquidated after fraudulent activity by several of its stockholders was exposed. In January 1841, however, it reopened for business under the title displayed on our current offering, and in 1849, the bank went into receivership, never to operate again. At center on this $5 is a depiction of an eagle perched atop a cannon. In the distance are sailing vessels. We have auctioned a small handful of this design and denomination previously, but this piece is one of the nicest we have had the privilege to offer. PMG mentions evidence of a previous mounting.
