Description

Philadelphia, PA- Bank of North America $5 Dec. 1, 1850 G172 PMG Very Fine 25.
Our only previous offering of an issued example of this rarer monochromatic design from this issuer was a heavily cancelled piece in the same grade that crossed our auction block last year. The bank, opened in 1782, was the first commercial bank established in America. It remained in business until it became a national bank in 1864 without having to change its name. This $5 design features Liberty seated in a large V with an eagle and shield nearby. This vignette is flanked by portraits of Benjamin Franklin and Rachel Jackson, wife of Andrew Jackson.
