Description

Natchez, MS- Planters Bank of the State of Mississippi $50 18__ G190 as Kraus 4076 (UNL) as Leggett 66 Proof PMG About Uncirculated 53.
The Planters Bank of the State of Mississippi was incorporated on February 10, 1830, with the state reserving the right to control 2/3 of the stock issued. The bank ultimately had seven branches in addition to Natchez. The Panic of 1837 severely impaired the bank's performance and by late 1843 court ordered land sales were underway. At least one source indicates that the bank was finally placed in liquidation in early 1844 after the state had repudiated the bonds it used to purchase a controlling interest in the bank. This $50 features a small vignette of sailing ships at center flanked by identical vignettes of a Native American male drawing a bow on each end. The note is printed on India paper with six POCs in the signature lines. PMG mentions evidence of previous mounting and a lightly penciled "12" which are of minimal concern given the significant rarity of this piece, listed as "none known" in Whitman, and unlisted in Proof form in Kraus and Leggett.
