Tallahassee, FL- Henry L. Rutgers 50¢ Nov. 15, 1841 Benice 89 PCGS Choice New 63.
Our current scrip offering was issued by Henry L. Rutgers, a relative of the founder of Rutgers University. He was born in New York in 1810 and migrated to Florida sometime in the 1830s, purchasing land in the state as early as 1838. During his lifetime, Rutgers served in several roles, including cashier of the Bank of Florida and treasurer of the Florida Territory. This note was payable at the Union Bank of Florida. The last example of this type that we auctioned was a PMG 62 EPQ? representative which realized $373 in October 2023. The piece in this lot was once a part of The Eric P. Newman Collection.
