Description

Washington, DC- Government Bank $5 Nov. 15, 1862 G6 Remainder PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
An interesting article appearing in the September 25, 1863, issue of the Washington Chronicle indicates that this bank was a fraudulent, non-existent institution and that an office with the sign Government Bank over its door had somewhat earlier been closed by the Provost Marshal of the War Department. Nonetheless, this is an attractive note with a great bald eagle vignette and a dark green overall tint. This note is in premium condition and presently one of two examples tied for the "top pop" position in the PMG Population Report out of forty-nine listed examples.
