Description

Bibb Furnace, AL- W.E. Johnston $5 Oct. 1, 1873 Gunther-Derby AO-115-$5a Rosene 17-1 PMG Fine 12 Net.
This scarce scrip note hails from the Bibb Furnace. During the Civil War, the Bibb Furnace at Brierfield Ironworks served as a key iron producer for the Confederate States of America. However, during Wilson's Raid of 1865, the facilities were destroyed. Postwar, the organization was rebuilt and operated until its permanent closure in 1894. This $5, issued by W.E. Johnston, features a male portrait, perhaps of Johnston, at left. A green decorative back is also present. We have only offered one example from this issuer previously, and that piece was none other than the note in this lot. This representative served as the Gunther-Derby plate note on page 52 of the reference and is most certainly unique or nearly so. PMG mentions pieces missing.
