Description

Austin, TX- Republic of Texas Naval Appropriation Warrant $50 Apr. 23, 1841 Cr. AW4 Medlar 46 Not Graded.
The note is professionally matted and framed under Plexiglas along with a nice artist's rendition of A Texas Navy recruit enlists for service on the sloop-of-war "Austin", riding at anchor in Matagorda Bay. Overall dimensions of the frame are approximately 17 by 19 inches and it is ready for hanging. Naval Appropriation Certificates were used for the second Texas Navy after the first had lost all four of its ships by 1837 due to war and Mother Nature. Commodore Edwin Moore was the chief officer of the Texas Navy. He and Sam Houston had different naval policies which led to these certificates being used to pay the men of the Texas Navy. The Austin was the flagship of the Texas Navy. She was commissioned into the navy on January 5, 1840. The ship was 125 feet in length and 31 feet across the beam, with a displacement of 600 tons, and a draft of 12.5 feet. She carried a crew of 23 officers and warrant officers and 151 sailors and marines. She was armed with 16 medium twenty-four-pound cannons, two eighteen-pound medium cannons, and two eighteen-pound long cannons. This item is not graded.
