Description

Jamestown, NY- Bank of Ellicott $1 185_ UNL Proof PMG Choice About Unc 58.
Based on an April 24, 1857, notice by the state Bank Department, the Bank of Ellicott, an "Individual Bank" style institution, had filed paperwork and was preparing to go into operation. There is no further mention of the bank after this date and only Proofs are known, suggesting that the bank never actually opened, but was considered a legitimate business in the process of organizing by state banking officials. The $1 design features a rendition of the New York coat of arms flanked by Justice and Liberty at center, flanked by the state bank department die at left, a maiden in water below, and a portrait of Webster at right. The note is printed on India paper and has four POCs in the signature lines. There were twenty-four examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo. Archives sale, all part of uncut sheets.
