Description

Rochester, NH- Rochester Bank $2 Jan. 2, 1852 G6 PMG Very Fine 20.
The bank was organized in 1834 and remained in business despite three robbery attempts which culminated in the bank deciding in 1853 to close and reopen with a new charter. The newly chartered bank operated under the same banner from 1854 to 1868 when it was succeeded by John H. Duffee & Co. This note is from the bank's original charter period and uses one of the last iterations of the Patent Stereotype Steel Plate design approach long favored by New England banks. This design features a vignette of an allegorical woman seated by sheaves during the harvest at left. The left end panel has an eagle and shield vignette while the right end panel features a vignette of, perhaps, America seated by a federal shield and cornucopia. A small dog and safe vignette is at bottom center symbolizing Fidelity. The note has four POCs that were likely applied when the note was redeemed by the second incarnation of the bank on July 13, 1861, as evidenced by a large annotation on the back. The note has a large damp stain which covers 80% of the note, with PMG also mentioning pinholes. This is only the second example of this note that we have been able to offer.
