Description

Lancaster, NH- White Mountain Bank $5 May 1, 1858 G16a PMG Choice Fine 15.
The bank received its original charter on January 1, 1849, but on July 12, 1850, another charter was issued. Despite the date of issuance for both charters, the institution did not actually open for business until 1852. It operated until 1865 when it went into receivership. This attractive $5 features a male portrait at lower right, Liberty with an eagle at left, and an allegorical female holding a telescope and federal shield at center. The layout is completed by a large red "FIVE" overprint at lower center. Though emitted in abundance, examples from the White Mountain Bank are challenging to obtain. We have only auctioned three representatives of this design variation previously. PMG comments on pinholes.
