Description

New Orleans, LA- Municipality No. One / City of New Orleans $2 Oct. 7, 1839 (?) PMG Choice Fine 15.
This $2 hails from Municipality No. One, an area in the "old city" occupied by individuals of Creole and French origins, as New Orleans was governed as three municipalities over the period of 1836-52. The design features a vignette of Ceres seated at center flanked by a left end panel containing a vignette of a farmer holding a sheaf of grain and a right end panel with the denomination shown in French: DEUX PIASTRES. There is an internal vertical tear at right. We have handled a number of $2s from Municipality No. Two and No. Three but none from Municipality No. One.
