Description

Scarce and Beautifully Designed Merchants' Bank $5

New Orleans, LA- Merchants' Bank $5 May 27, 1862 G22a PMG Very Fine 30.
Formerly known as the Bank of James Robb, this institution changed its name in 1859 and reestablished itself under the Free Banking Law. It would conduct business for two decades longer before closing after the Civil War in 1879. This lovely piece bears a classic Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson design, with a portrait of a young woman with a book gazing to the left side of the piece at right and Commerce holding a caduceus and seated near a cornucopia at center as a sailing vessel floats across calm waters at center. A pelican mother feeding her young, an image often used to symbolize Louisiana, is featured at left, and an orange-red "V-FIVE-V" overprint completes the design. We have auctioned just one representative of this design and denomination previously, and that piece crossed our desk in January 2018. More recently, in January 2024, we offered a $10 example of similar layout which was certified at the PMG VF 25 level and brought $1,320. While it has seen some time in circulation, our current offering retains nice color and has not attracted any significant condition impairments. Notes from this concern are excessively rare, and we are unlikely to see another appear for auction in the near future.
