Description

New Orleans, LA- Bank of Louisiana $500 June 14, 1862 G30a PMG Very Fine 30.
The Bank of Louisiana operated from 1824-63, and it quickly established itself as one of the most productive institutions in the area, emitting a plentiful array of notes bearing different designs. Today, the $500 layout, which is represented in this lot, as well as the $1,000 note from this concern are both popular. This piece depicts Liberty with her pole and cap seated near a federal shield at left, a grouping of ships sailing at full mast near a busy harbor at center, a vignette of the bank's building at lower center between the signature lines, and a female portrait at right. A colorful orange back with a large white "500" at center completes the design. The piece possesses full inner and outer frame lines as well as nice color for the achieved grade. PMG comments on a spindle hole at left, hidden within the illustration of Liberty.
