Description

Wapello, IA- City of Wapello $1 Aug. 31, 1857 Oakes 109-1 PMG Very Fine 25.
Located along the Iowa River, the city of Wapello is the seat of Louisa County. The notes of this 1857 Wapello series, which comprised four denominations, are signed by Recorder Levi Fisher and Mayor Samuel Townsend. This bright, fully framed ace features a depiction of the steamship Wapello at left and a Native American brave seemingly gazing at the approaching vessel at right. A large red-brown "1" protector at right completes the design. A steamer by the name of Wapello likely never existed, but the addition of a city's name to a stock illustration of a vessel that the printer had on hand provided vignette customization services at an affordable price. PMG has not commented on any meaningful condition impairments, and no forms of cancellation are present.
