Inspiration for the T32 Confederate Treasury Note

Savannah, GA- Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah $5 Oct. 1, 1855 G6a PMG Very Fine 30.
Chartered in 1854, the Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah operated until December 17, 1859, when the institution changed its name to the Farmers and Mechanics Bank. Our current offering, issued about a year after the concern was established, features a portrait of a young boy at lower left with a large "V" die counter above and a machinist bearing a hammer and seated near his anvil at right with a factory and steam locomotive in the background. A large "5" die counter surrounded by guilloche patterns at upper right and a large red "5" overprint at center complete the design. Both vignettes on the face were also utilized by Leggett, Keatinge & Ball as part of the T32 Confederate Treasury Note of 1861's design. In fact, the plates for this denomination and design were donated to the Confederate Treasury by the bank so they could produce the T32. We are not often afforded the privilege of auctioning a piece of this type from this popular bank. The last $5 of this number that crossed our auction block was graded at the PMG VF 20 level with evidence of a previous mounting and brought $900 in October 2025. Our current offering has a closed pinhole by the "18" in the date, but it should outperform that realization due to its higher grade and excellent eye appeal.
