Description

Savannah, GA- Bank of Commerce $10 18__ G8b Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was organized in 1856 and remained in business throughout the Civil War. Newspaper notices indicate that the bank was still in business as late as very early 1866, but had been placed in the hands of a receiver by early August of that same year. The Bank of Commerce was associated with G.B. Lamar, the southern banker who had arranged for the printing of the Montgomery CSA Treasury Notes in New York just before the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. The $10 design features a large ocean-going steam-powered vessel as well as a vignette of a Native American male holding a large axe at right and a small vignette of the Georgia coat of arms at bottom center. A large red TEN protector spans the bottom portion of the note. This example is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with four small POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes minor stains. Eighteen examples of this design appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
