Description

Rome, GA- Rome Railroad 10¢ Sep. 12, 1862 PMG Very Fine 30.
The Rome Railroad connected with the Western and Atlantic Railroad and spanned 20 miles from Rome to Kingston, GA. This organization was in operation for an extended period of time and, after being purchased by the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway in 1896, it was abandoned in 1943. This delightful scrip note features a vignette of a dog holding a key and guarding a safe, which symbolizes Fidelity, at left and a large steam locomotive at center. The piece was printed by Mason's Job Office, a firm well known for their work on other notes from Rome and the surrounding area. We have not auctioned an example of this denomination from this issuer since April 2015. PMG comments on annotations which are minor and appear at lower right on the back. A quite scarce note which should attract considerable interest from Georgia enthusiasts.
