Description

Fort Gaines, GA- John Dill 50¢ Jan. 1, 1841 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
John Dill, a high ranking officer in the Georgia militia, ran a general store and tannery in Fort Gaines. This sharply printed and attractive note features a vignette of farm produce and implements flanked by an oval cameo-like helmeted medallion head 50 counter. A vignette of a farm boy resting during harvest is at left and another of two allegorical maidens representing the Arts is at right. Printed on India paper with three small POCs in the clerk signature line. One example of this note appeared as part of an uncut sheet (Lot 273) in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. It is likely that this is a unique surviving Proof from this issuer.
