Description

Darien, GA- Bank of Darien (Georgia) $50 Apr. 20, 1819 G44 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20 Details.
The bank was organized in 1818 with six branches and remained in business until the summer of 1841 when, for all intents and purposes, the bank was insolvent. Its charter was subsequently repealed and the bank placed in receivership. The $50 Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. design features an eagle perched on bags and barrels on the waterfront. The end panels contain FIFTY at left and FIFTY DOLLARS at right. The note has been severed (possibly as a security measure where each half of a note was sent through the mail and rejoined when both halves safely reached the recipient) and reattached with paper straps. This is only the third example of this early $50 that we have offered.
