Description
Trophy State of Florida $5 with Stunning Color
Tallahassee, FL- State of Florida $5 Mar. 1, 1864 Cr. 35 PMG Gem
Uncirculated 65 EPQ.The $5 in this lot was emitted as part of an issuance of $300,000 in Florida Treasury Notes authorized on December 3, 1863, to assist in providing money for a $500,000 relief fund for soldiers' families. The designs of this series' notes were similar to those of the March 1, 1863, series, but the date was changed to March 1, 1864. Our current offering features a Geo(rge) W. Hatch illustrated and signed vignette of a Native American brave holding a bow and arrow at left with a small "FIVE" panel below and an allegorical female, likely identifiable as Juno Moneta due to the bags of coins situated near her feet, seated on cotton bales at center. At right is an oval Florida seal containing Justice and Ceres. Flanking the central depiction are two red "V" protectors as well as a large red "FIVE" overprint below. The Cr. 35 variation is characterized by paper watermarked "W.T. & Co.", as can be found on this representative. Though all denominations from the series are obtainable, the same cannot be said for a piece of this caliber. Printed on bright, completely original paper with vibrant overprint color and a generous, full frame, this note has achieved a lofty Gem grade. We have not previously had the opportunity to auction an example of this variation at the Gem grade level. This note will undoubtedly take any collection to which it is added to the next level. Our conservative estimate could very well be surpassed tonight.
