Description

Washington City, DC- Farmers and Merchants Bank $10 Dec. 3, 1860 G26a PCGS Banknote Very Fine 25.
The Farmers and Merchants Bank was organized in 1851 and remained in business until 1863. Apparently Smithson was considered a southern sympathizer and was arrested and initially imprisoned in January 1862. Reading between the lines, he was at least temporarily released before being convicted in late 1863 and receiving a term of five years in prison. Apparently, this sentence was commuted as there is a December 1864 notice that Smithson was calling a meeting of his creditors on January 2, 1865. This $10 should not be confused with the more commonly encountered lower denomination notes on this bank. It features an interesting center vignette of a female cooper (barrel maker) flanked by vignettes of a farmer holding a hay rake taking a break at left and a portrait of Washington at right. The red text Secured by Virginia 6 percent Coupon Bonds deposited with running vertically across the left end is struck out in red ink. The back is just as interesting with a detailed advertisement for the Central Hotel in Charlottesville, VA. Based on the proprietor's name (William J. Parrott) this ad dates to around 1873. PCGS Banknote mentions tape (at bottom center on the back) and an ink mark (presumably between MONTECELLO and CENTRAL on the back) neither of which is overly distracting on this note which served as the Haxby plate note (Volume 1, page 196).
