Description

Washington, DC- Bank of the United States $1 Nov. 25, 1852 G10a PCGS Banknote Very Fine 25.
The Bank of the United States organized itself in 1852 as an entirely fraudulent entity using the title of a closed institution to lend itself credibility. It operated for several months before closing its doors in 1853. The elusive ace presented here represents a rare opportunity to acquire an example from this bank. Engraved by Wellstood, Hanks, Hay & Whiting, this piece depicts an unidentified male at left, a bald eagle perched atop a federal shield at upper center, and Justice holding her scales and sword at right. A small vignette of another eagle at lower center between the signature lines and a large red "ONE" overprint complete the design. We have not offered a $1 from this company since January 2010, when this same example crossed our auction block for $718. Expect that figure to again be reached, if not exceeded, tonight. PCGS Banknote comments on minor ink erosion in the register's signature.
