Description

Litchfield, CT- Litchfield Bank $10 18__ as G8 Proof PMG Uncirculated 62.
The bank was chartered in 1856 and opened the following year. It was a fraudulent operation with virtually no paid-in capital that had bribed several bank note reporter companies to list the notes as "good" in their publications. The whole fraud collapsed and the bank was placed in receivership on November 22, 1858. The $10 design has a vignette of Agriculture and Liberty seated by the Connecticut coat of arms at center flanked by vignettes of a sailor standing by a seated mechanic, titled Union, at left and another of Ceres, Hope, and perhaps Manufacturing at right. The note is printed on India paper with six POCs in the signature lines, one of which has a paper pull resulting in minor paper loss. There were two examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
