Cahawba, AL- State of Alabama $20 Feb. 5, 1822 Cr. C52 Gunther-Derby AS-001-$20i PCGS Banknote About Unc 53;Cahawba, AL- James J. Pleasants $250 Receipt Feb. 5, 1822 PCGS Banknote Choice VF 35 Details.
The $20 note is from the final 1822 Cahawba issue. The piece in this lot was issued to James J. Pleasants for "copying the laws and journals of the legislature." PCGS Banknote mentions that the note is crosscut cancelled and has a small stain. This number is very rare and seldom offered with Shull estimating a surviving population of perhaps 5-15 notes.
The second item in this lot is a manuscript $250 receipt, covering the accompanying $20 warrant plus several others as penned on the back is the serial number of the covered warrants. In this case, the warrants are serials 89-108, and the serial number of the Cr. C52 in this lot is 94. The receipt has edge splits as well as ink transfers. It is highly unusual to pair these two related items together after all of these years. (Total: 2 items)
