Description

Charleston, SC- Bank of South Carolina Spurious $10 Aug. 1, 1859 S5a Sheheen 371 PMG Very Fine 30.
This is a spurious design with no resemblance to any legitimate issue of the bank. It is reasonably well done, even having an ochre-colored overall tint and twin orange and white X protectors. The note's downfall was precipitated by the poorly done cameo heads which were virtually impossible to duplicate without the special equipment owned by the bank note companies. Nonetheless, an attractive and interesting example.
