Description
Bentonsport, IA- Town of Bentonsport $1 (2) Aug. 1857 Fine.According to a contemporary newspaper item, $5,500 in scrip was issued in 1857, with an additional $5,500 authorized for issue in January, 1858. The purpose of the issue was to support the construction of a rail line. The $1 design features vignettes of a young Native American family in a canoe and Hope standing with an anchor. One of the two notes has a rumpled top margin although this could probably be reversed with a little patience. (Total: 2 notes)
