Description
Albany, NY- Uncertain Issuer (Wynkoop & Negus) 1¢ Oct 2(?), 1814 Harris UNL Fine.Datelined Albany, this note appears to be issued by a merchant partnership operating under the banner of Wynkoop & Negus (?) ca. 1814. The Wynkoop attribution is pretty solid but the partner's name attribution is not. Nathaniel Negus was listed in the 1814 Albany City Directory as an Inn Keeper and might have been a silent or junior partner. The spelling of his name also seems to fit the handwritten signature on the 3¢ note from this issuer. The note features a small warship vignette with the quote "Don't Give Up the Ship" first uttered by Captain James Lawrence during battle in 1813, and later adopted by Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of !812. This excessively rare note, making its first appearance in this auction and joining a 3¢ we last sold nearly two decades ago, has been nearly severed and repaired with tape. It appears that repair could probably still be reversed if desired.
