Description

Charleston, SC- Bank of the State of South Carolina $1 (2) 1850-62 Very Fine.
The pre-war 1850-dated note is hammer canceled with a stamp on the back indicating that it was involved with the post-war litigation surrounding the bank's ability to declare bankruptcy. There is also a spindle cancel and a pin or needle hole in the young woman's head.
Originally dating from the 1830s-40s, the 1862-dated note design features a vignette, not of the bank's headquarters which was demolished in 1909, but of the "Old Statehouse" prior to 1788. It was destroyed by fire in that year, rebuilt in 1792 with the addition of a third story, and serves today as the Charleston County Courthouse located at 84 Broad Street. The note's payee, Stephen Elliott, served as the bank's first president (1812-1830) and had been dead for over three decades when this note was issued. To add some security protection to these notes, a large red ONE protector was added. The note was printed on pre-war paper watermarked T.C.C.&Co., indicating that it was probably printed from plates that the bank had in storage in 1861-62 since that paper post dated the original issue dates of the design. (Total: 2 notes)
