Description

Henry Dearborn Letter Signed as Secretary of War. Nov. 15, 1802. Not graded.
Handwritten letter from Henry Dearborn to William Linnard, Esq. Linnard was Executive Agent to the Secretary of War. Dearborn served under Benedict Arnold in the expedition to Quebec during the Revolutionary War. He was Jefferson's Secretary of War when this letter was written. President Jefferson often consulted Dearborn on matters of military law and management. During the War of 1812 he was placed in charge of the northeast sector. This letter from the War Department reads as follows:

"Sir,
Your favor of the 11th inst. has been duly noted. I have directed the Treasurer of the United States to transmit you four thousand dollars on account of your Agency.
I am respectfully your Hum..e Sir..e H. Dearborn."

A couple of small patches of paper tone and a couple of tiny edge split do little to distract one from the historical importance of this piece.
