Description

Detroit, MI- Bank of Michigan $10 18__ G28 Lee DET-6-34 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
A rarity among early Michigan banks, the Bank of Michigan, which was chartered in late 1817 and opened in 1818, remained in business for twenty-four years until 1842 when it closed its doors due to financial reversals occasioned by the Panic of 1837 and its aftermath. All creditors were paid off with real estate. The $10 design features a large eagle framed by two cameo-like medallion heads. Each end panel has a vignette of a seated Native American. The note is printed on India paper with no forms of cancellation present. PMG mentions faint evidence of previous mounting which is not distracting. There were four examples of this note (an uncut sheet of four) in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. At present, we believe that at least eight examples of this Proof exist.
