Description

Charleston, SC- South Carolina Rail Road Company $20 July 1, 1873 Sheheen 674 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30.
The $20 denomination is far scarcer than the commonly seen post war $1, $2, $3, and $5 notes, with reportedly only 120 $20s issued. In order to skirt federal laws prohibiting issues like this, these notes were portrayed as "fare tickets". In this case, this $20 "fare ticket" was good for the fares of four passengers for 125 miles. The note is printed in red-brown and black and features a vignette of a horse-drawn wagonload of cotton bales at left and a more elaborate vignette of a large freight wagon being unloaded in an urban setting. The ABNCo printed note also has an elaborate red-brown back. The note has fourteen POCs of two different sizes.
