Description

Pottsville, PA- Miners Bank of Pottsville $1; $2 June 11, 1841 Remainders Crisp Uncirculated.
These notes were so-called Relief Notes that were part of a state program designed to assist the state's struggling finances and were redeemable only in sums of $100, taking the form of state bonds issued by the state Auditor General, rather than specie. The program received only lukewarm support, with the underlying bonds trading at greater than a 20% discount in during the 1840s. Ultimately 34 banks in the state issued $2,220,265 in these relief notes. (Total: 2 notes)
