New York, NY- Young & Jones "100" Advertising Note ND (ca. 1840s) Vlack 3025 Very Good-Fine.
Joseph Bates was a lottery broker who issued a number of advertising notes beginning in 1865. The note's denomination stems from the street address number of his office (11 Wall Street ) This example served as the plate note in Vlack's advertising note catalog (page 103) and has minor damage in two corners.
John Hook is listed with the occupation Hotel Keeper crossed out and Porter House substituted in the 1850 Census for New York. This latter term was applied to some taverns in the 19th century, with this note being receivable for ten cents "in the bar". The hotel name on the note would have been popular after the conclusion of the Mexican-American War in 1848. The note has several patches / repairs of body holes and some soiling.
The shoe manufacturer and dealer Young & Jones was a frequent newspaper advertiser, doing business from the address shown on this note from 1845 to around 1849, with Young having apparently left the business sometime around 1847. The note, with vignettes of Justice and two classical personages, has a bit of rust, primarily on the back, but faces up quite well, with no repairs. (Total: 3 notes)
