Description

G.F.C. Smillie BEP Appointment. A letter dated February 5, 1894 on BEP stationery signed by the Bureau Chief. It reads in part "I now have in my possession your appointment as an engraver in the Bureau with compensation at the rate of $6,000 a year and hope that you may be able to report for duty within thirty days...We will have some designs ready for you to work on, which, when executed will add to your already great reputation as an engraver...I believe (your appointment) is the best ever made in this Bureau." Also enclosed is the onion skin copy of the White House March 31, 1922 Executive Order terminating Smillie and nearly all other employees of the BEP. Also, a February, 1923 newspaper article where the ousted Bureau workers consider a libel suit against the President. An incredible bit of history. (5 vignettes) Est. 750up (Total: 5 vignettes)
