Description

Atlanta, GA- The Western & Atlantic R.R. 50¢ Aug. 1, 1862
This railroad was founded on December 21, 1836 and was owned by the state of Georgia with Atlanta as the terminus. It was one of the better railroads in the Confederacy. The Yankee Andrews Raid, occurred on the line on April 12, 1862. It involved stealing the W&A locomotive, "The General", in an unsuccessful endeavor to wreck railroad bridges. It was forever immortalized in a 1965 Disney film "The Great Locomotive Chase. The rail line was destroyed during Sherman's March to the Sea. Included with this Fine, roulette cancelled note is an unused postcard of "The General" and a detailed description of the chase that tells us that the signor of this note, one Wm. Grisham, was a clerk at the Dahlonega Mint from 1844-49. (Total: 3 items)
