Description

Gigantic 500 Pesos from The Ten Years War

Cuba Republica de Cuba 500 Pesos 8.9.1869 Pick 59 PMG Very Fine 30.
Cuba's Ten Years War for Independence from Spain was a revolutionary movement that began in 1868. On October10th, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, a large plantation owner, declared a Republic of Cuba. The War raged for 10 years but proved unsuccessful. Denominations from 50 Centavos to 1000 Pesos were issued over a two year period, with the highest denominations being quite rare today. In fact, we have only offered this denomination twice previously. This outstanding example is hand-signed and dated by Cespedes, and also features the signature of Minister Izaguirre. Rare, pretty, and historically important.
