Rare Inverted Back $2 1917 Legal Star Note

Inverted Back Error Fr. 57* $2 1917 Legal Tender Star Note PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
Only 15 inverted back large size stars are documented in the fourth edition of United States Paper Money Errors by Dr. Frederick J. Bart. This can be further broken down to being one of only three $2 Legal Tenders and just one Fr. 57* with an inverted back. The attractive and problem free error in this lot is certainly one of the nicer pieces that you will find in that select club. It traces its provenance to the B. Max Mehl June 15, 1943, auction of The Albert A. Grinnell Collection where it realized all of $2.25. That paltry result helps explain why Mr. Grinnell chose to enlist Barney Bluestone to sell the main portion of his collection.
