Description

One of Three Known in Public Hands

Fr. 1133-J $1,000 1918 Federal Reserve Note PMG Very Fine 25.
The face of the Series 1918 $1,000 Federal Reserve Note features a portrait of Alexander Hamilton engraved by G.F.C. Smillie and a simple but dramatic back design with a wonderful vignette of a Bald Eagle, simply titled Eagle, by Marcus W. Baldwin. With an original issue of just 4,400 notes and a very high face value, it is no surprise that only five examples are currently reported in the Track & Price Census for this Friedberg number, with one of those residing in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and a second (sn. J57147A) apparently an errant entry having a serial number that is too high for the number printed (4,400). This nets then only three examples known in public hands. This note is well printed on bright paper with bold colors and decent margins and centering. PMG mentions a restoration that does not blatantly advertise its form or location and, therefore, does not have any meaningful impact on this attractive note's visual appeal. We last offered this note over a decade ago when it crossed the auction block for $21,737 in 2013.
