Description

Very Rare Fr. 791 - Likely the Finest Known Example

Fr. 791 $5 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
Fr. 791 is an relatively unheralded rarity. The most recent Track & Price census shows 18 examples known in all grades combined, with the actual total certainly under two dozen. Many are low grade, and, of the high grade examples known, only two have previously been graded Uncirculated. One of these, which long reposed in the collection of Amon Carter, Jr., was listed in the census as Uncirculated, but, when slabbed by PCGS, was found to be Choice AU 58. The other, formerly part of the James Thompson holdings, was graded Choice CU when last offered in 1991, and has not been seen since. The note we offer this evening has been part of the Coral Gables Collection for two generations, and was obtained privately, having had no previous auction appearances. It is the only Fr. 791 graded by PMG in any grade over AU 55, making it easily the finest known, as PCGS had never graded an Uncirculated example. Expect to see active bidding here, as another opportunity to obtain any Fr. 791 in this grade may be very long in coming.
